(AP Online Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Microsoft Copy Protection Cracked AgainSEATTLE (AP) _ Microsoft Corp. is once again on the defensive against hackers after the launch of a new program that gives average PC users tools to unlock copy-protected digital music and movies. The latest version of the FairUse4M program, which can crack Microsoft's digital rights management system for Windows Media audio and video files, was published online late Friday. In the past year, Microsoft plugged holes exploited by two earlier versions of the program and filed a federal lawsuit against its anonymous authors. Microsoft dropped the lawsuit after failing to identify them.



Google to Unveil Business Search EngineSAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Google Inc. is offering to run the search engines of small Web sites for as little as $100 per year, marking the company's latest attempt to make more money off technology that already steers much of the Internet's traffic. The service scheduled to be unveiled Tuesday is aimed at the millions of Web sites that either don't have search engines or are unhappy with the quality of their current search results, said Nitin Mangtani, a Google product manager.

VoIP Provider SunRocket Suddenly ClosesWASHINGTON (AP) _ Internet phone service provider SunRocket, which had as many as 200,000 customers nationwide, has ceased operations without warning. The move by SunRocket, which offered service via Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, was first reported Monday on The New York Times' Web site.

Progress Seen on Internet Radio TalksNEW YORK (AP) _ Internet radio broadcasters and the music industry appeared to be moving closer Monday to resolving a dispute over a new system mandating higher royalty fees for streaming music online. Participants described the negotiations as constructive and said they hoped to build on the momentum achieved last week, when both sides promised quick progress on the issue at a closed-door Congressional meeting held by Rep. Ed Markey, D.-Mass.

Iran's New Game: `Rescue Nuke Scientist'TEHRAN, Iran (AP) _ An Iranian hard-line student group unveiled a new video game Monday that simulates an attempt to rescue two Iranian nuclear experts kidnapped by the U.S. military and held in Iraq and Israel. The "Rescue the Nuke Scientist" video game, designed by the Union of Students Islamic Association, was described by its creators as a response to a U.S.-based company's "Assault on Iran" game, which depicts an American attack on an Iranian nuclear facility.

Samsung Names Memory Chip Unit ChiefSEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest memory chip manufacturer, has named a new official to take charge of the memory chip division of its semiconductor business. Cho Soo-in, the chief of Samsung's memory chip production center, was promoted to head of the division, said company spokeswoman Lee Soo-jeong.

Philips 2Q Profit Up SharplyAMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ Royal Philips Electronics NV, a maker of medical and lighting equipment, said Monday net profit for the second quarter rose on the sale of its stake in a Taiwanese semiconductor company, but that exchange rates hurt sales. Net profit was 1.57 billion euros ($2.16 billion), up from 301 million euros a year earlier, while sales fell 4.4 percent to 6.10 billion euros ($8.40 billion) from 6.38 billion euros.

Vodafone Denies Report on Verizon BidLONDON (AP) _ Vodafone Group PLC on Monday denied a newspaper report it is considering making a $160 billion bid for its U.S. partner in the wireless phone business, Verizon Communications Inc. The Financial Times reported earlier that the company was considering making an offer, but cautioned that a bid may not emerge. Any such deal would create a business worth about $300 billion.

IBM in $1.4B Services DealARMONK, N.Y. (AP) _ IBM Corp. said Monday it has won a $1.4 billion outsourcing contract from AstraZeneca PLC, a seven-year deal aimed at helping the British pharmaceutical company manage its internal technology operations. IBM will run servers, data storage, desktop computers and networking services for AstraZeneca around the world. The contract is an extension of a relationship the two companies have had over the previous seven years.

India Tata Consultancy Profit Up 37 PctNEW DELHI (AP) _ India's top software company, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., said Monday profit in the April-June quarter rose 37 percent from a year ago, as new outsourcing contracts helped offset the impact of a stronger rupee and higher salaries. Mumbai-based TCS said it won six customers, including a leading Asian telecommunications company, with contracts valued at more than $100 million each for the current financial year ending in March 2008. In all, the company added 54 new clients through the quarter, the company said in statement, without naming its customers.
