Omc powering off-grid telecom towers and leading the way in rural electrification; Life-changing work recognised at upcoming GSMA Awards

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) New Delhi, India -- OMC Power today announced that it now has 11 Micropower Plants operational in India capable of serving 150,000 people not covered by the electricity grid and supplying power to 40 off-grid telecom towers.

OMC is a Resco (Renewable Energy Service Company) and the first company to transform the provision of electricity in rural India into a commercially viable, sustainable and scalable business. Its Micropower Plants small-scale, local power plants using renewable energy sources vastly improve the quality of life and stimulate economic growth and prosperity in the rural areas where they are being deployed.

Last year OMC Power entered a 10-year contract with Bharti Infratel to supply power to its telecom towers in rural and remote locations. OMC Power has moved power from CAPEX to OPEX enabling telecom tower companies and mobile operators to source electricity directly from OMC Power rather than running their own diesel generators. OMC Power estimates that it has already reduced emissions of telco-generated CO2 by 2,000 metric tons annually.

OMC Power also provides electricity to residents and businesses to power mobile handsets, fans, lighting, TVs, fridges, water pumps and other household and business appliances.

OMC Power will be taking part in the GSMAs upcoming Global Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: Its CEO and co-founder, Anil Raj, will be discussing the companys progress on Monday 25th February as part of a seminar on Energy and Mobile for Development (9.30am 11.30am, room C1.1).

OMCs roadmap covers many additional services which can be provided once electricity is in place including cable TV, Internet and electric vehicle rental.

Anil Raj, OMC Powers CEO and co-founder, says; Since our first Micropower Plant went live, the demand for electricity has exceeded our expectations. We already cover 30,000 homes and 150,000 people, drastically reducing the need for kerosene and diesel an average rural home consumes 50 litres of kerosene every year just for lighting.

Our target is to provide renewable electricity to 10 million people and 3,500 telecom towers by the end of 2015. This really is the time for Micropower. Our customers need it, as does the climate. Its very satisfying to see renewable energy finally making financial sense!
