Cox doubles up on San Diego broadband speeds [Emirates News Agency (WAM) (United Arab Emirates)]

(Emirates News Agency (WAM) (United Arab Emirates) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Cox Communications is doubling up the downstream speeds on two of its most popular tiers in San Diego County.

The speed of Cox's Preferred tier will increase from 25 Mbps down to 50 Mbps while the Premier offering ramps up from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps. Cox said the Preferred and Premier tiers represent more than 75 percent of its data customers in San Diego.

On the high end, Cox's Ultimate tier will go from 100 Mbps to 150 Mbps. The San Diego speed upgrades are slated to be finished by Thursday.

The upstream speeds stayed the same for all three tiers: Preferred 5 Mbps up; Premier, 10 Mbps; and Ultimate, 20 Mbps.

"Internet usage is doubling every two years, and this increase marks the 10th consecutive Internet speed increase in 11 years for our customers," said Suzanne Schlundt, vice president of marketing for Cox Communications in California. "Consumers are adding more and more devices to their Wi-Fi networks to stream movies and TV shows, download music and share photographs. We'll continue to invest in our network to offer a broadband experience that not only meets our customers' needs, but exceeds them." The San Diego speed upgrades came on the heels of Cox announcing earlier this year that it would have its Gigabit service, which is called G1GABLAST, in all of its markets by the end of next year. The Gigabit rollout is underway in Phoenix with Las Vegas and Omaha to follow. Cox announced last week that it had signed up its first G1GABLAST customer in Phoenix.
