Cellcom Deploys New Mobile VoIP Roaming Service with Help From AudioCodes and MailVision
By Patrick Barnard

VoIP technology provider AudioCodes (News - Alert) and its partner, mobile VoIP technology provider MailVision, have teamed up to bring a mobile VoIP solution to Cellcom Israel, one of Israel’s largest cellular operators with about 3.2 million customers.

The custom solution, Cellcom (News - Alert) Link, will allow Cellcom’s mobile subscribers to initiate VoIP calls and send text messages over a WiFi connection at low rates.

MailVision (News - Alert) offers a mobile SIP client and mobile SIP platform that carriers can use to roll out voice over Wi-Fi. The company’s mobile VoIP solutions run on Windows and Symbian (News - Alert) devices as well as Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch – as well as a wide variety of access technologies, including UMTS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and WiMAX. (Cellcom operates an HSPA 3.5 generation network, in addition to GSM/GPRS/EDGE and TDMA networks.)

One advantage of the solution is that it will allow Cellcom subscribers to make low cost VoIP calls over Wi-Fi while they are abroad in other countries – or just outside of Cellcom’s service footprint – regardless of which carrier’s network they are using.

"Mobile operators are now able to offer an alternative to low cost PC-based calls," said Zeev Lerner, CEO of MailVision, in a release. "By selecting to use our advanced mobile VoIP solution platform, mobile operators can offer roaming end-users the ability to make calls at a significantly reduced rate."

"We are delighted that Cellcom selected the HD VoIP enabled SIP Mobile Soft Client (Pico) as a new service offering for their subscriber base," added Lior Aldema, vice president of marketing and product management at AudioCodes. "This advanced technology will extend Cellcom's offering to both residential and enterprise subscribers travelling abroad, while offering cost-effective rates, intelligibility and enhanced voice clarity."

"We are constantly searching for advanced communications solutions in order to benefit our customers and offer them innovative technology," said Adi Cohen, vice president of marketing at Cellcom. "The service is not intended to replace the existing Cellcom Abroad service, rather to serve as an additional solution for customers travelling abroad who make many phone calls with WIFI supported devices and would like to cut costs, while retaining their personal cellphone number."

Peter Gerstenhaber, senior sales engineer, AudioCodes, will be presenting a session, “Who's Listening? The Truth about Enterprise SIP Security,” during ITEXPO West 2009, Sept. 1-3, in Los Angeles. The session, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2, will cover the challenges and the misconceptions surrounding SIP Security and examine the tools available to counter them.

AudioCodes is a Platinum sponsor of ITEXPO (News - Alert) West 2009.
